The purpose of this report is to collate and examine all the information gathered over the life of this project and provide industry with recommendations on locations, growing techniques and “know how” about the successful production of conventional and organic lettuce and baby leaf in sustainable growing regions.

The key components of the project

1 - A study tour to identify best arid area growing practices

• Two project team members travelled to the California and Arizona where they visited multiple lettuce farms. The key learning’s were the technology used to maintain product robustness, the commercialisation of organic production and the approach the growers took to soil health and plant health.

2 - Site Evaluation

• A desk top study locating potential regions for the production of lettuce and baby leaf crops
• A research trip to comparable locations to fine-tune the growing practices that have the highset chance of success

3 - Best Practice Evaluation

• Process capability and consumer suitability quality assessment completed

4 - Technology transfer

• HAL milestones and final report
